Meet Mr Purcell

item18

To mark the 300th anniversary of his death, Hazel Brooks (violin) and David Pollock (harpsichord) perform music by Purcell and his contemporaries. The programme will include the Suite from Abdelazar and a medley of dances and theatre tunes by Purcell, and a sonata by his brother Daniel.

Hazel Brooks specialised in early music when studying violin in Leipzig and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and was a finalist in international competitions in York and Antwerp.  She now works principally as a recitalist and in chamber ensembles such as the Brook Street Band and the Sweelinck Ensemble. David Pollock studied harpsichord at the Royal Academy of Music where he won the Croft Early Music First Prize. He has appeared at such venues as the Purcell Room and St John's Smith Square London, St. David's Hall Cardiff and the Fairfield Halls Croydon and performed for TEMS in November 2005.

Pantagruel

Laydie Louthian’s Lilte

item21

A programme of Ballads, Ayres and Dances from 17th Century Scotland, performed in period costumes. Expect everything from Celtic tinged instrumentals, to melancholic Scots ballads and even lute songs from John Dowland (whose fame had spread across the border from England), in a programme which demonstrates the vitality of music that, although almost 400 years old, has lost none of its power.

Back by popular demand, Hannah Morrison’s pure and sweet voice combined with the citterns, gitterns, lutes and flutes played by Dominik Schneider and Mark Wheeler will ensure some great music making. But it is the improvisation, wit and spontaneity which add theatre to the performance and make Pantagruel memorable - and remind us why nothing beats live music.

Tickets for non members available on the door: £10.00, students and juniors £5.00

Stile Antico

Song of Songs

Presented in association with the Arts at Dartington Dartington

item24

The erotic poetry of the Biblical Song of Solomon inspired composers of the Continental Renaissance to some of their most ardent music. Love, desire and seduction are explored in a rich selection of motets by Spanish composers and composers whose works would have been known in Spain, in this concluding concert in our season.

Stile Antico is an ensemble of 13 young British singers who were prizewinners at the 2005 Early Music Network International Young Artists’ Competition. Their first recording, Music for Compline, won the prestigious Diapason d’Or de l’Année, the Choc du Monde de la Musique, and was nominated for the 50th GRAMMY awards. They have appeared throughout the UK, including at the York, City of London and Lake District Summer Music Festivals and broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3. During 2007 they collaborated with Sting in his project Songs from the Labyrinth, performing lute songs by John Dowland. Their second disc, Heavenly Harmonies, was released in early 2008 to critical acclaim

Tickets: £12.50, concessions £11.00, students and juniors £5.00

Available at a later date from the Dartington Box Office (01803 867070) or on the door.
