The Society

TEMS was set up during August and September 1999 with a view to offering its members a number of recitals during the Autumn/Winter season of Mediaeval to Baroque music, performed by professional players, supplemented by lecture-recitals and workshops.

The aim of the Society is to provide a high standard of performance of historically-informed early music to individuals and families in the South Devon area.  The area is not deprived of good music with Dartington nearby and the Devon Baroque and Ten Tors Orchestras touring the region but there was clearly a need for an organisation devoted exclusively to early music on a chamber music scale, able to attract performers of national status to this comparatively remote corner of the country.

Membership reached 110 in the first season and have varied between 100 and 125 since.

Members mostly live in Totnes but over half are drawn from villages and towns in South Hams and from Torquay, Paignton, Exeter and Plymouth.

A further aim is to develop awareness of the variety of music in the periods covered, along with a deeper appreciation and knowledge of the music itself and its historical roots. This is effected in the recitals themselves (programmes, including notes on the pieces played, are free), in lectures and lecture-recitals and in workshops run by the performers for members and non-members.

Venues

The main venue is the Parish Church of St. Mary’s in the High Street,Totnes. This season, one concert will be held in the Great Hall, Dartington.
